Bringing Our Unique Cultures to Life

A Principal's Perspective

By Ms. Sara Stoquert

Principal at Loughman Oaks, Polk County FL

At Loughman Oaks we have such a diverse staff and students. Our diversity makes our school unique, and we have found ways to highlight our different cultures throughout the school year.

This month our staff and students are having a "Rep your Culture" day where we dress as our unique cultures and showcase who we are and where we come from. Our ITV crew creates an amazing cultural video once a month to show our students. In these videos we highlight the different places our staff and students are from.

Our bulletin boards throughout the campus show images of the different cultural monthly celebrations. Students can see themselves in these posters and pictures.

We are having a cultural food tasting in December (a potluck) where everyone is bringing in foods and drinks that represent themselves.

At the end of this school year, we are bringing Epcot to Loughman Oaks! We will have a parent/student cultural night where students and their families are given a passport and can visit various booths that represent countries around the world.

We want everyone to feel that their culture and history is a part of our school. Everyone from everywhere is honored.
